Crowdfunding call for upkeep of indigenous cows at Vaanavil Farm : 2026 - 27

Hello everyone!

As you might know, we have been raising non-descript indigenous cows at our farm in Vikramasingapuram, Tirunelveli district since 2019. We now have 30 cows in our farm. This is a crowfunding call for their upkeep. Please read on if you would like to contribute.

Our average monthly revenue from livestock rearing is โ‚น15000. This includes:

  • Milk retained for our family, farm stay guests and people who work at the farm.
  • Sale of compost made from cow dung - this is a recent product addition to our online store and will take some time to gain traction
  • Sale of bulls - we look for people who want to buy and raise them for rearing instead of selling them to a trader who might sell them to a slaughterhouse.
  • Sale of dairy products

This income isn't high because we raise cows as ethically as possible and desi cows don't yield high amount of milk. We let the calves have maximum amount of milk. ย The environmental impact of raising our cows is also minimal because we do not feed them any grains - they only graze free range in and around the farm.

We have been spending an average of โ‚น25000 monthly towards upkeep of our native cows. โ‚น15000 is towards wages of Muthukumar of Sivanthipuram, who has been leading the cows for grazing every day.

The rest of the amount is towards feed such as hay, coconut meal, rice bran, salt - all of which are local purchases, in the interest of keeping the footprint low.

To cover the difference of the โ‚น10000 monthly, we have been raising funds from well-wishers, family and friends every year - โ‚น3000 per month is covered by recurring donations.  Sharing this responsibility of protecting genetic diversity of local breeds amongst supporters like you helps us reduce the financial burden on our savings. We have also raised from our friends a total amount of Rs. 20500 so far. For the financial year 2026 - 27, the total funds needed would be โ‚น63500.

P.S. The ghee listed on our organic groceries store is not made from the milk of cows of Vaanavil Farm & Food Forest. It is from the native cows at iLink farms, Sivasailam.
